Alzheimer’s & Dementia Therapy

Helping Preserve Movement, Independence, and Everyday Ability

Best in Home Care 2021

Physical, occupational, and speech therapy designed around the abilities, routines, and goals of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Therapy That Works With the Person

Practical support for changing abilities

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia changes much more than memory. Over time, many people also experience changes in walking, balance, coordination, communication, swallowing, judgment, and the ability to complete familiar everyday activities.

Therapy cannot cure Alzheimer’s disease or stop the underlying disease process. It can, however, address many of the functional changes that occur along the way. The goal may be to maintain an existing ability, make an activity safer, develop a more successful way to complete a task, or support function after an illness or hospitalization.

Mind & Mobility provides in-home physical, occupational, and speech therapy throughout our service area and at our outpatient therapy clinic in Boca Raton.

Maintaining Ability Matters

Improvement is not the only worthwhile goal in dementia rehabilitation. Being able to continue walking to the kitchen, dress with less assistance, get safely in and out of a favorite chair, communicate a need, or participate in a family meal can make a meaningful difference.

Our therapists build treatment around the person, the home, the family, and the abilities that remain important to everyday life.

Three Disciplines, One Coordinated Plan

Therapy built around everyday function

Physical Therapy for Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Support strength, balance, and safe movement

Physical therapy may address walking and gait, balance, transfers, getting up from chairs and beds, flexibility, walkers, physical activity, and fall-risk factors.

Occupational Therapy for Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Help preserve the routines of daily life

Occupational therapy can support dressing, grooming, bathing, meals, home setup, adaptive equipment, familiar routines, hobbies, and safer ways for caregivers to cue and assist.

Speech Therapy for Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Support communication, thinking, and swallowing

Speech-language therapy may address functional communication, word-finding, memory strategies, cognitive-communication skills, caregiver cues, and eating or swallowing concerns.

What Alzheimer’s and Dementia Therapy May Address

Support for movement, communication, and daily participation

Treatment is individualized. Depending on the evaluation, the person’s abilities, and the goals of care, therapy may include:

Walking and Gait

Practice with steps, turning, navigating furniture, and moving through familiar spaces.

Balance and Fall Prevention

Activities and home strategies that support safer movement and stability.

Transfers

Getting safely in and out of chairs, beds, vehicles, and other daily surfaces.

Dressing and Personal Care

Simple routines, cues, and adaptive strategies for everyday tasks.

Communication

Strategies for expressing needs, following conversations, and participating with family.

Eating and Swallowing

Evaluation, education, and strategies for more comfortable and safer meals.

Home Setup and Safety

Recommendations for bathrooms, chairs, pathways, objects, and predictable routines.

Caregiver Participation

Practical ways for family members and caregivers to cue, assist, and reinforce strategies.

Different Ways of Learning Can Still Work

Therapy that respects the person, not just the diagnosis

Repetition and Familiarity

Practice can use familiar routines and meaningful activities instead of long lists of instructions.

Visual and Physical Cues

Simple cues, reminders, and environmental changes can support participation in daily tasks.

Predictable Routines

Consistent approaches can make familiar activities easier to understand and complete.

Family Involvement

Therapists can show caregivers ways to assist without unnecessarily taking over.

The goal is practical function: supporting what the person can still do, making activities safer, and helping families build care routines that feel manageable.

The Advantage of Therapy at Home

In-home therapy lets the therapist see the actual chair that has become difficult to stand from, the hallway where balance is a problem, the bathroom that feels confusing, the kitchen where meals take place, and the bedroom where morning routines begin.

Family members and caregivers can participate, learn appropriate ways to provide assistance, and reinforce useful strategies between visits.

Medicare Part B and Private-Pay Dementia Therapy

Our in-home and outpatient therapy visits are available on a private-pay basis or may use the same Medicare Part B coverage you would use when visiting a physical therapy office. This includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology when Medicare requirements are met.

Medicare recognizes skilled therapy that may help improve function, maintain current capabilities, or support a slower rate of functional decline when requirements are met. Our in-home therapy is outpatient therapy brought to the patient, so eligible patients are not required to be homebound as they would be under the separate Medicare Home Health benefit.

Coverage, deductibles, coinsurance, and requirements can vary. We can help you understand your therapy options and what information may be needed to get started.
